How is the IPL structured?

There are 8 teams that compete in the Indian Premier League. Each team plays the other twice, in due course of the season. In total, 56 league matches are played in an IPL season.

For each match won by the team, the team is awarded 2 points. In case of a washout, 1 point is awarded to each team. A super over is played if there is a tie, and 2 points are awarded to the winning team. If the super over also result s in a tie, another super over is played. This continues until a result is established.

The top 4 teams at the end of the group stage get qualified for the IPL playoffs. The least number of points by which a team can qualify is 8, and the maximum number of points by which the team can still fail to qualify is 20.

The playoffs comprise the Top 2 and 3rd and 4th placed teams in the group stage, contesting each other respectively. The winner of the match played between the Top 2 teams gets qualified for the Finals directly, while the loser of the match competes against the winner of the match played between the 3rd and 4th placed teams.

The winner of this match gets qualified for the finals.
